The U.S. Office of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a variety of programs and services for veterans and their surviving spouses. Information on all of these benefits is available at Vba.va.gov/vba. While the range of benefits includes everything from home loans to life insurance, this ALFA Toolkit provides information on the Aid & Attendance (A&A) and Housebound Benefit programs. Veterans and spouses may be eligible for these needs based benefits when a beneficiary requires assistance with activities of daily living, such as help with dressing, bathing, eating, preparing meals, etc. These benefits may not be paid with or without a beneficiary’s eligibility for pension. At the state level, ALFA works with legislators, regulators advocacy groups and ALFA affiliates and chapters to shape assisted living laws and regulations to serve the best interests of the residents, their families and our members.
