ALEXANDRIA, Va. – March 20, 2012 Senior Living Executive
, the award-winning magazine of the Assisted Living Federation of America
(ALFA), has released its much-anticipated annual list of the nation’s largest senior living providers. The list features the Top 80 Largest Providers—giving readers and industry watchers a broad view of the competitive senior living landscape. The list and accompanying story appear in the March/April issue of Senior Living Executive
, which is available in print and as a digital edition at www.alfapublications.org
The year 2011 saw a number of REIT-based acquisitions, higher absorption, major management deals, and small amounts of construction, leading to a number of shakeups in the top 80 list. The list ranks for-profit senior living operators by total resident capacity (as of Jan. 1, 2012), as reported by each company. The top 80 senior living providers now account for a total operational resident capacity of nearly 504,000 (up 9 percent from 2011), including more than 245,000 in independent living and almost 239,000 in licensed assisted living.
The top five companies remained unchanged with the exception of Brookdale Senior Living overtaking Emeritus Senior Living for the top spot with capacity of 63,472 after acquiring the operations of Horizon Bay Retirement Communities (no. 7 in the 2011 list).
