House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN) has introduced the Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act to help prevent changes to union election rules initiated by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in recent weeks. The Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act addresses recent National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) actions, which shorten the time workers have to make an informed decision in union elections and permit certain categories of employees: such as nurses or dining staff, to form “micro-unions.” The legislation would reinstate traditional standards for determining workers qualified to vote in a union election and give them at least 35 days before the union election to hear both sides of the debate. The bill would also provide employers at least 14 days to prepare their case for presentation in front of a NLRB election officer and protect workers’ privacy by allowing workers to choose what type of contact information is provided to a union. ALFA, in collaboration with The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace and other organizations that support labor issues, will send a letter to the Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Kline (R-MN) and Ranking Member George Miller (D-CA) in support of the Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act. The bill originally had fourteen cosponsors and will be discussed further at a House Committee on Education and the Workforce hearing today, October 12th at 10 a.m. Read the full bill H.R. 3094, and watch the hearing: Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act.
