Although a majority of nurses predict their job and financial future are secure, most do not feel like they are saving enough money for retirement. According to the recent poll, these nurses have also altered retirement plans significantly in response to the current volatile market. The Fidelity Investments’ survey found that 79% of nurses feel that their job was secure, but 42% believe that they will never fully retire. More nurses expect a financially difficult retirement with 28% of nurses expecting to struggle to make ends meat, which is up from 18% in 2007. Though many respondents thought that other professions had it worse. Almost half of those surveyed felt that they were more emotionally and financially ready for retirement than those in other professions. 98% of nurses predict changes in the nursing profession throughout the coming years. With health care reform, rising costs, and a difficult economy the majority of nurses thought that a shortage of qualified nurses would be a problem. Respondents also cited more demanding hours and nurses leaving the professions as major issues affecting the profession. Despite the challenges a majority of nurses "love their jobs and can't imagine giving them up, even in retirement," according the survey.
