Consumers Shaping Future of Resident-Centered Assisted Living Says Assisted Living Federation of America

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – March 15, 2011 – The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) today participated in a U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging roundtable titled, “Assisted Living at the Dawn of America’s ‘Age Wave’: What Have States Achieved and How is the Federal Role Evolving?” Brenda Bacon, vice chairman of the ALFA Board of Directors and president and CEO of Mt. Laurel, NJ-based Brandywine Senior Living discussed why assisted living continues to grow as a popular option for seniors who can no longer live at home alone, but don’t need or want institutional forms of care.

“The U.S. Senate roundtable reconfirmed the great strides our country has made to champion quality of life for seniors over the past 30 years,” said Richard P. Grimes, president and CEO of the Assisted Living Federation of America. “Prior to the dawning of assisted living in the 1980s, seniors and their families had few if any options beyond institutional forms of care. Today, millions of seniors and their families benefit from residential senior care options, such as assisted living, designed to provide choice, independence , dignity and quality of life. The combination of consumer interest, supportive state regulatory frameworks and innovative senior living companies is defining the future of resident-centered assisted living. “
